NEWSAR Charity Ride 2024

Riders and their pillions, assembling outside the Wheatsheaf, Raby, Wirral.

On Sunday 1st September 2024 the Wirral Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club organized a charity ride out raising money for NEWSAR (North East Wales Search And Rescue).  A total of 32 bikes turned up at the start point, and it was wonderful to see so many different types of bikes, different experience levels and different ages within the group.  One person in particular had only recently passed her bike test and this was her first charity ride out and commented on how friendly the group were and how welcome everyone made her feel.

After the initial weather forecast being, rain and wind the weather was on the side of the riders as they set off in the sunshine for the hour- long journey from The Wheatsheaf, Raby, Wirral to The White Horse, Cilcain, North Wales via the North Wales coast road.

Once arriving at the White Horse the bikers had the opportunity to meet some of the NEWSAR team, enter a raffle and enjoy some light refreshments, they were also welcomed by the pub owner Lisa who had joined the ride on her own motorcycle.

It was a great opportunity for the bikers to meet new people both from other bike clubs and from the village.

Paul Henson who is one of the Wirral Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club members nominated NEWSAR as the charity as his daughter Donna Harrison needed the assistance of NEWSAR in August 2022 after a serious horse-riding accident left her with massive trauma and an open wound to her left thigh whilst she was out hacking with her mother (Chris Henson) and two more friends.

After calling for an ambulance it became apparent that a normal ambulance would not be able to access the scene of the accident and so NEWSAR were called.  It took only twenty minutes for the first member of the NEWSAR team to arrive at the scene and start administering first aid and pain relief.  Once stable and then moved onto a stretcher the team carried Donna to a safe and convenient place to be picked up by the ambulance.  She was monitored continually until the ambulance arrived two and a half hours later.  She was then taken to the Wrexham Maelor Hospital for emergency surgery that evening.

Since the accident Donna has vowed to raise £7000 to buy NEWSAR a new much needed lightweight and diverse stretcher.

As many already know the motorcycle community are extremely generous when attending any charity bike event and this one definitely proves this point raising a fantastic £272 on the day.

NEWSAR is a volunteer Search and Rescue (Mountain Rescue) Organisation. Their primary operating area is in North East Wales mainly covering the counties of Flintshire, Denbighshire, Wrexham and parts of Conwy and Powys.  The team also regularly assists Mountain Rescue teams elsewhere in North Wales as well as Lowland Search and Rescue teams in Cheshire and Shropshire.

They are a group of volunteers who help the Police by looking for vulnerable people who are missing from home or those in need of rescue and they are available 24 hours / 365 days a year.

They are a Registered Charity (England and Wales Number 1192256) and affiliated to the North Wales Mountain Rescue Association and Mountain Rescue, England and Wales.

They receive no government funding and rely completely on the generosity of the general public donating and organising events such as The Wirral Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club did at on 1st September.

Both Donna and NEWSAR would like to send their heartfelt thanks to all that attended and supported this event.
